My Knock-Off of a Knock-Off

You may have heard of the scandal about Forever 21 being the queen of knocking off high-end designers and getting sued all the time by the likes of Anna Sui and Diane von Furstenberg? Anyway, here in lowly, fashion-deprived Costa Rica, the designers don't even have the know to knock off the originals, instead they knock off the knock offs and you end up with an even more distorted version. Lucky for me, I don't even really care. Check out the following three dresses:

This is the dress I bought yesterday at Aliss, the cheapest-ass department store in Costa Rica (well, after Carrion, I suppose) and it's made by a brand called New York Collection. Three cheers for those fun random finds!

So, those of you who have seen me lately have probably noticed the giant, colourful, butterfly sunglasses I've been wearing. I bought them at that boutique in Desperately Seeking Susan where she gets the jacket. Anyway, someone (can't remember exactly who, but it might have been Soren) called me up and told me that these were the exact glasses that Mugatu wore in Zoolander.

My Google search didn't yield any actual Will Ferrell as Mugatu pictures, but this guy came pretty close I think... yes?

Anyway, this has inspired me to be Mugatu this Halloween (yeah, its May, what gives?). Anyone wanna be Zoolander or Hansel with me?

I just added yet another link to the tp of my muses list. This time its a street fashion site from Kuala Lumpur who I found when visiting the Polyvore homepage of the creator of one of my favorite sets. Here is his/her Polyvore site, thanks yesme. And here's the set:

I really liked it for a number of reasons. I have a skirt almost identical to this one that I picked up at a thrift store for $20. It's in perfect condition and fits precisely. The only problem was that I couldn't figure out a way to dress it down without taking away from the initial appeal of the skirt. I think that this set did that pretty damn well. It's sets like this one that keep me going back to Polyvore It's such a great place for inspiration and advice.

That Tourist Shirt & My Mom's Closet

So, I got impatient and went ahead and cut the shirt that I showed you (in a dark, sideways picture) and I think it looks pretty sweet. Ch-check it out.

And, in other news, I was going through my moms closet trying on ALL of her shoes longingly and all that good stuff when I can across this long top that I fell in love with. I came downstairs with it and expressed my adoration for it and so she told me I could have it. It is love. Anyway, once I get started taking pictures, I have a hard time stopping, so while I was documenting the tourist shirt, I snapped some photos of me wearing the long top as a mini dress.

The suede, fringed jacket was one of my New York purchases. I know we never had an official NY shopping post, but it will all be revealed in due time. Yeah, the jacket is fun, its a Moschino Cheap & Chic jacket that I bought at a flea market for like $40.

So there's this sleeveless shirt that a friend of my moms bought for me when she was down here visiting and I've sort of fallen for the bird print on front, but the shirt is a bit big. It's big in an awkward way, it sort of sticks out around the underarms and I've been trying to decide how exactly I want to modify it. A friend of mine showed me this neat little trick she does with big shirts where she cuts slits up the sides and then ties it back together (I know this is not a new concept and I know I'm borderline horrible at cutting up my own clothes, but she did it with such ease that I felt emboldened to give it a try), so what do you think?

Tuesday Evening Rant

I've been thinking lately about people in the fashion world, with the fashion state of mind. And I've been thinking a lot about the differences between The Sartorialist and Face Hunter. I believe that fashion blogging is a separate unit in fashion entirely because it's sort of disconnected from the world. It involves so much fantasizing in criticizing and obsessing (not to mention plagiarizing, but that's a different story). Some times I get so caught up in trying to distinguish myself through my clothing and be unique, that I end up looking exactly like every other hipster, or I look absolutely ridiculous and have to take a step back and think about if I am actually considering leaving my house dressed in pajama shorts and a camisole (true story). This is Face Hunter's downfall. They become so fixated on finding people "ahead of our time" and "fashion forward" that many people they feature seems to be heading to a costume party. I'm not saying that The Sartorialist hasn't made any faux pas's and caused me to close my computer screen and shudder in disgust (well, maybe not that bad), but at least he seems to have a mission: to illustrate the timeless and universal elements of style. While Face Hunter has gone off on a journey to another planet, Scott Schuman (The Sartorialist) shows us the classics and the rebels (like I have said before - you have to know the rules before you break them).

Bad Fashion = Good Fashion

Bah, okay I lied. I've been awful at posting, I'm sorry. The truth is is that I haven't gotten around to taking pictures of the stuff I bought in New York, so I've been avoiding my blog. Don't get your hopes up, I haven't snapped any pics yet, I'm just here to show you a bad fashion check list. I think a lot of it is valid and I see where it's a good guide for someone recovering from style disaster, like the women you see on TV getting make-overs (Thank-you What Not To Wear, you keep me entertained for hours). But the main problem I have with this check list is that almost every single one of these so-called faux pas's can be taken and turned around into a fashion statement. It's the simple principle of "Once you know the rules, you can break them" (same goes for writing, by the way). There are a few 'infractions' that really are inexcusable like camel toe, inappropriate bulges, and visible pantyline. Anyway, I think you should take a look at it, and do the checklist. Don't be worried if you have a couple checkmarks on there, in fact, give yourself a pat on the back. Go against the grain, man.

The City of New York

Sorry for the lack of posts recently, I've been in New York. Well, I'm still in New York, actually, and I'll be here till the 21st doing New York stuff.
Things I have done in NY include:
-Shop (flea markets, Goodwill, Macy's)
-Eat (Chinese food, Japanese food, home-made food)
-Walk around (don't ask me where, I don't even know where I am right now)
-Take pictures (of all the happy little people with green faces and 'kiss me I'm Irish' shirts)
-Get sick (fucking Chinese food)

Since I'm feeling a little under the weather, I cut my shopping short today and came back to the apartment my mom and I are staying at. I don't know, I'm not feeling so great about the prospect of living in New York anymore. Maybe I'm just feeling pessimistic because I'm sick, but all I could think about today was how everybody here was such a stereotype and how New York is great, but the problem is that everyone here is so New York. Like, I feel like its all such a facade and that everyone from New York is so obsessed with the fact that they're from New York that they forget that the rest of the world exists. DO I want to have to live somewhere where I'm thinking about how everyone is always putting on a show all the time? That and it's really fucking cold.
I don't know though, I bet New York really is the fantastic place full of interesting people that I've always heard about but I'm so bored with it because I'm with my mom and she makes it feel like work when we go out and do stuff.

Well here's some pictures that resemble some of the stuff I bought at the flea markets because I feel some sort of need to at least pretend to end this on a high note. I really just want to go home.

I suppose this will be more of a music post than anything else, due partially to the recent influx of music to my library thanks to Soren (and my new iPod music-stealing software, woohoo). The sad news is that I've given up on my bittorrent, I don't know what the deal is, but it takes an album like 2 months to download, if ever. Frustration.

Dashing Lashes

Allow me to begin to express my utter bewilderment and wonder of these gorgeous false eyelashes. When I see these pictures, they are so much more than that. They're a statement, a persona (your gateway to your alter-ego). It's kind of hard to tell from the picture, but that isn't make up below here eyes, its the light shining through the plastic eyelashes and casting an orange glow on her cheeks. It looks like magic.
The make-up artist who designs these, Kakuyasi Uchiide, was interviewed by PingMag, and both parties had interesting statements to make about this new fad.

Such a small accessory like feather lashes seem to give a woman’s face a kind of creature-like aura - transform her into a bird…

Of course! The feather lashes would make you change dramatically. Our lash collection can be applied to any situation - from natural to dramatic.

Interesting what that might also imply about our perception of beauty - are we drawn to an image of beauty that resembles us of archaic nature, possibly?

I like more the idea that cosmetics or make-up is an art of daily life. And there are many things we get impressed of in everyday life - everything surrounding me can be inspiration.

This is the most beautiful, intricate, amazing swimsuit. Everything about it - the boyshort bottom, the low underarm, the mind-blowing knot design - is perfection.

I've had this picture sitting around for a while, just chilling on my Toshiba, but since I rarely use my PC anymore because I finally bought speakers and can listen to music from my Mac, well, I never got around to uploading it till now.

I'm sort of torn about my Macbook right now. It's nice because its lightweight and starts up quickly, but I've been using the new iMovie a lot lately for this hellish economics project and its just so stupid with some things, like what kind of program doesn't have a setting that you can speed up or slow down footage??

I FINALLY worked up the courage to get a fringe. I was so worried that they would cut it too short or it would look horrible, but I'm actually quite pleased with the result. My hair is a little greasy in the picture, I'll get a picture of it when it's clean, it's just that after I get my hair cut, I try to keep that fresh hair thing for as long as I can, and I think it's approaching that moment.

In other news, I'm pretty sure I'm obsessed with Polyvore. I refresh every 10 minutes at least to see if I have new comments or favorites. I'm not doing too badly actually, I came in 4th in a contest about heritage (it was about the sliver of Russian in me, even though it barely even counts).

Fortunately, it's only another week 'till I go to New York! God, I just can't wait. Think of all the flea markets and thrift stores (I hope I get to go to one of those where you can buy clothes by the pound!).

New York, Come and Save My Soul!

So, this morning I found out that y summer has fallen apart. My sister and I were going to bum around Europe with some friends of ours since we have to be in Viena for my cousins wedding anyway, but as it turns out, our friends can't go anymore, so I'm not sure what I'm going to do... I still want to go to Holland, but it feels like it just won't be the same. Thankfully, I still have New York to look forward to. My mom and I are going to NY over spring break to check out schools, so I plan on doing a lot of thrifting there. There are a few things I need to pick up there, just some basics I don't own yet.

I don't need any of these things exactly except for Coco Chanel (my new fragrant obsession), but I'd like to find some things similar to them. Yeah, there's no way I could afford an Hermes scarf, but wouldn't it be nice if I could...?

Today was a very productive day for music. I have a new burned CD and copied some cool stuff from my friends ipod onto my computer. I know I was questioning my Mac and continually comparing it to the Toshiba that I have, which doesn't run so smoothly. I've always been partial to the Toshiba just because I have most of my music on there but now, I want to put my music on the Mac instead. My main reason for having it on the pc is that the macs speakers are so tweaky right now. Well, actually the speakers themselves work fine, but it stays on mute unless it's hooked up to my external speakers, which is what I've started doing. And I can also just take headphones with my computer, which I actually prefer to listening out loud. I really do need an ipod, it would be so convenient. Oh and about the picture, I just like the outfit, especially the jacket which fits her really well.

Amazing, awesome things to do with old t-shirts. Done by this Urban Renewal woman, Mari Santos. I saw a book on this when I was in Vermont, but for some reason I didn't buy it. How foolish of me, considering I have so many ugly baggy t-shirts that I would NEVER wear, obviously. But I wouldn't just throw them out, that's such a waste, so now they're all just sitting in my pajama drawer, which brings me to another subject:
Pajamas.
I don't actually wear them, but I really like the concept. My friend tells me that in China, nice pajamas used to be a status symbol, so now people wear the most beautifully embroidered pajamas out during the day. I wish I did wear them, but it's just I prefer wearing regular clothes, and when I take off my clothes to go to bed, I can't really be bothered to put something else ON, so I just stop there... On occasion I do wear this nice pair I own, just to dress it up a little, feel a little fancier as I sleep. Oh how silly I am.

There were also a lot of really provocative pictures which got me to thinking: why does sex sell so much? And why is it that sex and fashion are so closely related? Sure, everyone loves sex, but here in Costa Rica, they try to market everythig as if it were pornography. For example, this past mothers day, there were posters everywhere with a young woman breastfeeding a baby, which is weird to begin with, but it's just that it was such a young, attractive woman that it became sexual. I've seen people try to inject sex into the strangest products; toothpaste, Ensure, Pizza Hut, I could go on, but I won't. Anyway, enjoy.

Grammy's Fashion

So every year the Grammy's come, I watch half, criticize the music and the system and the self-obsessed artists, then halfway through, I give up all hope and go to my room to listen to music that I actually like. There are, however, good aspects to the Grammy's. The few respectable people that actually show up are fairly well dressed, I must admit. And I happen to think Jason Bateman is quite charismatic :)

London Fashion Week So Far

Hey hey hey. I told you I'd post some pics from the LFW catwalks so here they are. I was unexpectedly thrilled with a designer named Bora Aksu who I've never heard of before. He used very light silky materials which he layered and paired over sheer black tights and thick leather vests (though I wasn't too fond of the vests - they were too horseback saddle-ish).

Love for Luella

Here are some highlights from the Luella S/S '07 line that I adore. I especially love the white rimmed sunglasses in the 1st picture and the silver pointy-toed heels in the 3rd.

I wish we were back in oh seven, now that I've seen this. I am now a woman obsessed. These pants are great, even if they do match the shoes. Frankly I'm getting a little tired of high-waisted. It's so clean and simple, and the bag gives off an air of importance.

The Drama and the Dress

In other news, I just got back from Guatemala where I participated in a drama competition (won some medals too, woohoo), and I've realized I love airport fashion. People like to dress a certain way when they're traveling, its a very determined style. So I took some pictures of people in the airports and some pictures of the drama geeks I befriended.

I swear, this photo is not sideways, she was standing on the wall. I dig the green trousers and her pretty long hair.

Oh, this is pre-Guatemala. My teacher has the sweetest shoes, these are some of her coolest. You go Dr. Lynch.

The bag in the last picture was in a store in the Guatemalan airport, the only semi-respectable thing was actually quite nice. I guess it's LUPO.

London Fashion Week

Yep, yep, London Fashion Week is coming up, from the 10th to the 15th. This is pretty exciting, I'll get some pictures of my favorites later on, but it'll be a good week for adoring clothes.
I'm checking out some of the lines that will be showing there and they look painfully cool, like Antoni & Alison, whose Autumn/Winter '07 runway models walked down with a bag of crisps or smoking a cigarette wearing emboldened, delicate, retro-style prints. I think my favorite line was Luella S/S '08 catwalk. The clothes are gorgeous and on top of that, Agyness Deyn modelled <3 http://www.londonfashionweek.co.uk/designers_catwalk.asp?designerid=314&seasonid=1 These clothes rip my heart out in the best way possible.

Moschino, I Adore You

This past summer, I was in Vermont with my mom and my sister visiting some friends. An old college friend of my moms knew a woman who collected and sold early American women's clothing, so we went to go see a knew batch of dresses that had been donated to her by a woman who had been collecting since she was six, and was now about 90 years old, if I remember correctly. Anyway, the dresses were gorgeous and in mint condition, but the real treasure was that this woman, Karen Augusta, also had a whole bunch of great 80's and 90's clothing, including a ton of fantastic Moschino vests and skirts and jackets. It was orgasmic, i swear. I lost my mind just looking at the stuff, so she let me try them on. I fell in love. Anyway, here are some great Moschino pieces I've found on eBay. Enjoy.

Yes, it's been a looooong long time, I know, I know. I said I'd keep up with this, but i haven't really felt compelled to share anything lately. Or, maybe I have but I had just completely forgotten about this blog. Yeah, that's more likely. Anyway, Rebecca is at college in San Fransisco now, so it's just me and Mama in the house. Its quiet and everything is predictable. There won't be music in the otheroom when I get home, and there won't be random intrusions into eachothers rooms just to catch up or ask to borrow something. No, everything she left behind, has sort of become mine. 96% of it stays in her room though, because why would I want all of the things she left behind for a good reason? Some of it is good though, like her sketching board and her amazing lamp. School sucks, the weekends suck, there's not much to it. Today, to keep myself doing something, I documented my wardrobe through pictures. I put together some outfits that I haven't worn yet, but I will, because they looked really nice. It was fun looking one way and then changing and looking completely different the next moment just because of the clothes I had on. It was a weird feeling.
